23 July 2009Ship Collision / Allision

On July 23, 2009, due to heavy fog, two fleet mates (Destination Gotland ferries) collided near Stockholm Sweden, The collision occurred at ~11 am. Reported were 12 injured, with 5 sent to a hospital. The MS Gotland ferry was carrying a total of 1338 passengers plus 76 crew. The vessel sustained hull damage (30 cm / 1 ft hole).

The other ship - HSC Gotlandia 2 (fast ferry) was carrying 579 passengers plus 19 crew. The smaller ferry reported serious starboard hull damages (large hole at the passenger deck height, smashing the entire seating lounge).

Both ships were declared operationally safe and sent to a shipyard for repairs.

Reportedly, the smaller ship tried to avoid collision with a large cargo ship. The veering maneuver sent it into the path of the fleet mate MS Gotland. HSC Gotlandia 2 departed from homeport Visby (Gotland Island) in the morning, with scheduled dock in Nynashamn Sweden at 11:35 am.
