Royal Caribbean is making its high-speed wi-fi, Voom, available on all 24 cruise ships in its fleet.
Voom is fast enough to stream movies, videos and music. It had been previously available on a handful of vessels, mostly Quantum and Oasis-class ships. Royal Caribbean has invested to deliver more bandwidth to provide speeds twice as fast as before, but at lower prices.
According to Michael Bayley, President and CEO of RCI:
"Everything our guests and crew can do online at home, they will now be able to do from onboard all of our ships around the world".
The announcement came shortly after the line introduced its new pricing structure allowing travelers to choose whether they prefer to use the Internet for social media, email and basic web browsing or more involved applications like streaming which require higher bandwidth.
- Voom Surf Voyage features unlimited email, social media and basic web browsing. The package starts at US$12.99 per day (for one device - additional devices are added at discounted cost). Family packages of 5 or more devices start at US$8.99 per device per day.
- Voom Surf + Stream features the same access as Voom Surf Voyage plus the ability to stream music and movies, as well as use texting, VoIP apps and video chat. Its cost starts at $17.99 per device per day (additional devices are added at a discount). Family packages of 5 or more devices start at US$11.99 per day.
