In 2018 Holland America Line (HAL) is to gain a second new ship named Nieuw Statendam. The announcement was made by Orlando Ashford, company president, during the dedication ceremony of 2,650-guest Koningsdam.

Ashford described the new Pinnacle-class ship as just the start for HAL, as it looks to expand after 6 years with no newbuilds.

Capable of carrying 500 more cruise passengers than any other ship in the fleet, the first summer of Koningsdam will be spent sailing from Amsterdam in Northern Europe.

Queen Maxima of The Netherlands performed the traditional dedication and naming of ms Koningsdam at the Dutch port city of Rotterdam.

Holland America Line will be working with Superbreak in order to run a series of ship visits for agents to see the new Koningsdam over weekends in Amsterdam during summer in addition to calls in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Portland. Ashford said:

"Holland America Line is writing the next chapter in our evolving story, yet we are a company with a deep history, and the name ms Nieuw Statendam perfectly blends our past, present and future.

"The previous Statendam ships have been among the most beloved in our history, and we eagerly anticipate sharing this beautiful new ship with our guests in 2018.”
