Passengers who arrive at Port Canaveral to board the mega ships of Carnival Cruise Line will now find upgraded facilities. After undergoing a US$48.38 million transformation to handle larger modern vessels, Cruise Terminal 5 opened this past weekend hosting Carnival Valor.

The improvements include an expanded terminal, longer 120-foot pier, new mobile passenger boarding bridges and new 1,044-space parking garage. Carnival Sunshine will also berth at Terminal 5.

Renovation of the 1991-built terminal started in August to allow Cruise Terminal 5 to handle ships that carry up to 3500 passengers, up from the previous capacity of 2500. The projects involved mostly local workers consisting of 37 companies with construction crew of 500 on the terminal, as well as 50 companies with a crew of 450 on the parking garage for 265,000 hours with zero injuries.
