The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported yesterday that Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas is now sailing to San Diego CA with at least 2 sick crew members and 114 sick passengers. They are all experiencing the GI symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.

The Celebrity Infinity is also in San Diego, California with another GI outbreak. Both ships sailed a similar itinerary from Ft. Lauderdale FL.

Cruise lines must report the total number of GI (gastrointestinal illness) cases, with updates posted online when they account for more than 3% of passengers and crew. The Legend of the Seas' outbreak is affecting nearly 7% of the passengers and 0.3% of the crew.

Royal Caribbean International is undertaking directions from the CDC to prevent further outbreaks, including disinfection procedures, announcements to notify passengers of the outbreak, and encourage case reporting and good hand hygiene.

Additional cleaning crew will be provided in San Diego to complete a thorough super-sanitization cleaning and disinfection.

So far this year 4 of the 5 GI outbreaks reported by the Centers involve Royal Caribbean cruise ships in the RCI and Celebrity Cruses fleet: Celebrity Equinox and Infinity, Grandeur and Legend of the Seas. The 5th outbreak is on Norwegian Pride.
