An Aqua Expeditions' river cruise ship sank on July 16, Saturday, after an accident that left some crew members hurt and 4 others missing. No passengers were onboard at the time.
The accident on Aqua Amazon riverboat took place during regular supplying and turnaround hours for restocking the vessel. An incident occurred, causing an explosion which resulted in its sinking.
According to a statement by Aqua Expeditions,
"All efforts are being made to get a better understanding of the status of the missing crew. The entire operations team is on the ground providing logistical support with local emergency services."
Cruise passengers scheduled to disembark on July 16 on Aqua Amazon were reassigned to Aria Amazon and other boats.
This is the 2nd cruise-related fire to occur on Amazon River in 2016. In April, 2 tourists died on International Expeditions ship.
The accident is also the 2nd to occur on Amazon River this week, following robbery of Avalon Waterways-charted ship. The investigation is ongoing.
