Hamburg maintains the position of Germany's leading cruise terminal this year. The port set a new record for cruise passenger numbers.
With 170 ships calling at port of Hamburg, it is expected to see cruise passenger numbers reaching 700 000 this year, according to figures released by terminal's operators CGH (Cruise Gate Hamburg). That is an increase of around 30% on 2015 performance. For 2017 CGH projects double figure growth.
Jens Meier, head of HPA (Hamburg's Port Authority), parent company of CGH, said:
"We've done a lot. And we're well prepared for the arrival of even bigger ships."
Steinwerder Terminal, which opened last year, has been used by 530 000 passengers and 90 ships since the beginning of 2016, according to CGH boss Sacha Rougier. The terminal for mega-ships was built to a standard that is unsurpassed elsewhere and proved popular with both operators and travelers.
