As part of her first scheduled docking, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ ms Europa 2 underwent technical maintenance from April 11 through April 24, 2015 at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg.

Modernization work and cosmetic repairs were carried out on board the ship at the same time: the 8 family apartments were renovated, the Sushi Restaurant Sakura and Sansibar were fully redesigned. The full list comprises around 700 changes and improvements.

More than 600 specialists from 80 international companies spent two weeks working on various structural elements on the cruise ship. Over 15,000 ft2 (4,500 m2) of new carpet were laid and 2,000 liters of paint were applied to the vessel.

The Sansibar was the main focus of modernization work. The most popular bar on ms Europa 2 was given a brand-new look and is already even more authentic, with room dividers in wine crates' form and integrated seating, wood paneling, and a “chandelier” consisting of 1,000 bottles of wine, giving it a beach bar atmosphere.

The Sushi Restaurant Sakura located on Deck 9 was redesigned in warm violet color scheme, with wooden lights, room dividers and built-in LED candles. In a statement, the company said the atmosphere matched that of a Japanese sushi restaurant.

The family apartments are more tailored to the needs of families after their modernization, with a section converted especially for kids and teenagers, including a children’s bathroom, baby changing table, bunk beds, a play area with a games and painting table, as well as a gaming console.
