Portuguese newspapers reported that Thomson Cruises' ship Thomson Spirit, with more than a thousand passengers, became grounded while trying to dock in the port of of Portimao, Portugal earlier this week. Portimao is in the Algarve region, southern Portugal.
On the day of the accident, Thomson Spirit sailed down Arade River to dock at 8:00 a.m. but spent nearly one hour and-a-half stuck in the silt. The Thomson cruise ship managed to dock at 9:20 a.m.
Such problems concerning silting in Arade River are known to local port administration. The Arade riverbed has not been dredged for around a decade.
