Carnival Corporation announced that the newest Princess Cruises ship, still under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, would be based in China when introduced in 2017 summer.

Homeported in Shanghai, the vessel will be the first year-round cruise ship designed and built specifically for the growing number of Chinese passengers. It will carry 3,600 guests on various itineraries, to be announced soon.

The new, still unnamed ship, will feature a number of innovations customized for Chinese cruise vacationers. It will offer the Princess Class experience introduced during the first season of the line and designed for the Chinese market.

Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises, announced that as the ship was still in the design phase they were looking forward to creating other exciting experiences and venues catering to the Chinese vacationer, which they would reveal in the coming months.

Princess began homeporting its ships in China last year, with an inaugural season of Shanghai-based sailings aboard Sapphire Princess. The ship returns for a 2nd China season, starting on June 4 and running through October 2015.
