A record number of liners will sail into Holyhead this year, including the most luxurious cruise ship ever built. The schedule for 2017 was revealed with 44 cruise vessels coming into the port town over spring and summer.

This will see over 20,000 passengers brought to Anglesey with a potential tourism windfall of more than £2m. It is a 47% increase in the number of cruise ships and 60% increase on passenger numbers compared to 2016.

Ships will dock at the Orthios (formerly Anglesey Aluminium) berth as well the refit berth, while the biggest boat due to dock (the Celebrity Silhouette) will be anchored in the outer harbour and passengers brought ashore by tender.

The list of boats due includes the Seven Seas Explorer – dubbed the world’s most luxurious ship - which is due to dock in June. It includes £10,000 a night suites, extravagantly designed theatres and lounges, and 1,500 crew to serve 750 passengers.

Economic Development portfolio holder Cllr Richard Dew said:

“It’s great to see our annual cruise programme going from strength to strength.

“We’ll be welcoming more ships and more passengers than ever before during 2017, as Anglesey cements its position as Wales’ premier cruise port destination.

“It promises to be a great summer with an increase in the number of cruise visitors who’ll be enjoying the fantastic tourist product we have to offer here on Môn - Mam Cymru - be it our fantastic beaches, stunning landscapes or great local produce.

“The Island and wider North West Wales region boasts a fantastic tourism package and we look forward to ensuring our visitors receive a warm Welsh welcome.”

The Isle of Anglesey County Council said it will continue to work in partnership with Welsh Government, Stena Line and Orthios to attract more cruise liners to the region.
