Nelson NZ may soon welcome twenty cruise ships per year as work continues to increase the potential of the city as a destination.

The season has proved a ground-breaking one for the city with 8 cruise ship calls this summer.

The port welcomed its largest-ever cruise vessel, Europa 2, prior to Christmas.

The 43,188 GT "floating apartment" ms The World arrived for an overnight on February 8, before another ship, ms Europa, arrived the next day.

At 196.3 m and 198.6 m long respectively and with combined 1000 passengers and crew that are expected to descend on Nelson city, Friday is to be a busy day from a commercial and logistical perspective.

The final two cruise vessels to visit this season are ms Bremen, which will call on Tarakohe March 4, before Sirena, expected on April 19.

A big part of the recent increase in cruise ships derives from extensive behind the scenes efforts from Nelson's local agencies to increase the region's profile as cruise destination, targeting higher spending voyages.
