The port of Hamburg is having a busy May. According to the managing director of Hamburg Cruise Center, Nadine Palatz, this month includes several maiden calls, port's 826th anniversary with 6 cruise ships in town, a total of 40 calls and over 100,000 passengers.

In a statement, Palatz summarized this month's schedule, which started on May 1 with a call by MSC Splendida, the largest cruise ship that will sail this summer from the Hanseatic city. The call was commemorated with the traditional exchange of plaques between ship’s captain and the port captain. Frank Horch, Hamburg's Senator for Economics, and Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Executive Chairman, were present. The HafenCity Cruise Center hosted a family-friendly event for all visitors with live music and entertainment.

The following weekend, May 8-10, the festivities focused on the 826th anniversary of Hamburg port. AIDAbella, AIDAsol, Europa 2, Amadea, Artania and Queen Elizabeth were in town for the occasion. The highlight was Saturday night: AIDA fireworks lit up the sky over Hamburg. Thousands of spectators watched the event.

Other maiden calls during May were the Ocean Diamond (May 12), Poseidon Expeditions’ Sea Spirit (May 16), followed by Mein Schiff 4 (May 22).

A maiden call was celebrated with a sea shanty: Hamburg Chamber of Commerce shanty choir performed on April 30 for all passengers of Regal Princess. The chamber of commerce offered cruise companies various services, such as welcomes with a fire boat or support for PR activities.
