While thousands of visitors are in Montreal for Grand Prix festivities this weekend, the city welcomed its first cruise ship since its Old Port got a US$78-million update.

MS Maasdam arrived from Boston MA with a total of 1,700 passengers and crew early Saturday morning at the renovated Alexandra Pier.

The upgrade project, that was announced last summer, is expected to bring new life to Montreal's aging pier and complete overhaul of Iberville passenger terminal.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre expects that cruise ships will bring US$30 million in tourism-related revenue during the city's 375th anniversary celebrations.

Montreal expects 110,000 cruise passengers to visit this summer. Their number has doubled since 2011.

While the upgrades are ongoing, the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer.
