With the birthday of AIDAcara on 7 June 2015, AIDA Cruises is celebrating the 20th year of its history. Yesterday evening, more than 20,000 guests toasted together aboard the ten AIDA ships, opening the anniversary commemorations.

"AIDA – an inspiring smile. The original turns 20" - the slogan of the anniversary campaign will provide inspiration till the end of 2016 with moving insights into the history of the company along with various events and promotions.

AIDA President Michael Ungerer shared that with the commissioning of AIDAcara, they had triggered a revolution in the cruise market. For the first time they had also generated a great deal of enthusiasm for that type of travel among young and lifestyle-oriented vacationers. Since that day, over 5 million passengers had put their trust in AIDA Cruises. Today AIDA was synonymous with "the most desirable vacation form in Germany". Ungerer added they had built 9 out of 10 AIDA ships in Germany and had invested a total of 2.5 billion euros.

The first AIDA, AIDAcara, was christened on June 7, 1996 in Rostock by Christiane Herzog. Volker Zausch served as the christening captain. In 1999, two additional new-builds were commissioned in Wismar at Aker MTW. AIDAcara got her 1st sister ship in 2002 - AIDAvita was christened on May 4 by Doris Schröder-Kopf. Supermodel Heidi Klum christened AIDAaura a year later, on 12 April 2003.

In a unique series, 7 newbuildings of the 2nd AIDA generation were put into service during 2007-2013 period. With AIDAprima, the 1st new-build of the newest ship generation, AIDA Cruises opened a new chapter starting October 2015.

The anniversary campaign of AIDA is opened with a birthday deal for sailing on AIDAcara to Cape Verde and the Canaries between November 2015 - March 2016. Those who book a cabin onboard AIDAcara between June 8 and 30, 2015, will take family or friends in 3rd and 4th bed for free, according to the “two pay, up to four travel” principle. The voyage can be booked at prices from 899 euros per person.
