The long tradition of Second City troups entertaining Norwegian Cruise Line's passengers came to an end. The contract of the Chicago-based comedy company with the cruise line concludes early 2018.

Second City actors have been a fixture of NCL ships' entertainment since 2005. Three of the line’s ships - Breakaway, Dawn and Gem - currently feature Second City ensembles.

Second City actors also give improv lessons to cruise passengers. Traditionally a troupe consists of 5 or 6 actors and a musical director.

According to the producer Beth Kligerman, who oversees casting for the NCL shows, the material performed on shipboard was

“...mostly on classic Second City themes, like relationships.”

“Not long ago NCL built its own facility in Tampa, Florida, and they have been producing in-house creations, including productions of such musicals as ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ and ‘Rock of Ages,’ ” said Kligerman.

“As for finding alternatives for the Second City, we are just beginning to work on that. But we are very proud of the fact that we have had a successful run with NCL for 13 years.”

Kligerman also revealed she was unable to speak about the potential loss of revenue after the cessation of Second City contract with Norwegian.
