The third cruise terminal of Hamburg, Hamburg Cruise Center Steinwerder, opened its doors on June 9. This fact will not only improve cruise facilities for over 500,000 passengers who visit annually, but signifies a change in the way cruise sector is managed in near future.

Secretary of state in the department of economic affairs, transport & innovation of Free and Hanseatic city of Hamburg, Frank Horch, addressed those attending by demonstrating the importance of cruise sector to the city and region.

The organisation of Hamburg’s activities comes under Sacha Rougier, managing director CGH Cruise Gate Hamburg, owned 49% by Hamburg Airport and 51% by Hamburg Port Authority. Coming from Port of Marseille which in 2014 handled 1.35 million cruise passengers, Rougier will be the single point of contact for all lines. The company will be in charge of both berth assignment and operations of Steinwerder Terminal and, from 2016, HafenCity and Altona terminals.

MSC Splendida called twice, AIDAbella three times prior to Steinwerder's opening. About EURO 64 million was invested in the 2-building terminal (one for embarkation, another for disembarkation), handling ships with a capacity of over 4,000 passengers.
