A week after Sandy Stimpson, Mobile Mayor, and a Carnival Cruise Line's representative dropped hints that the city and the company were close to terms on extension, the Mayor returned to Mobile on Monday night with a contract that was ready for City Council approval.
The agreement is not a new deal. According to Stimpson, Carnival was simply exercising the option to continue its current contract, expiring in December, for another year.
He added the development was significant on at least a couple of fronts: at first, it provided reassurance that the city of Mobile was not about to suffer a repeat of 2011, when Carnival Cruise Line abruptly ended service from the cruise terminal of Mobile, and secondly, it likely gave Stimpson a fresh success to claim in his bid for a 2nd term.
