Cruise ships carrying around 20000 passengers were stranded in the Gulf yesterday, August 25, as the Category 4 storm Hurricane Harvey came ashore in the middle of Texas coast, closing Port Galveston.

Three ships of Carnival Corp were unable to return to Galveston as scheduled and two of them, Carnival Valor and Carnival Freedom, were forced to divert instead to New Orleans and pick up fresh supplies.

The line said that passengers could get off the two ships in New Orleans but in a statement posted on its FB page advised against that.

A 3rd ship, Carnival Breeze, extended its stay in Cozumel, and began sailing back to Galveston. The next scheduled cruises on all 3 ships will be shortened and clients will receive refunds.

Royal Caribbean said that its Liberty of the Seas had departed Cozumel on time on Friday and was scheduled to return to Galveston but officials are still trying to determine if cruise ships could safely return on Sunday, August 27.
