Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) said it would raise company’s suggested gratuity to $12.95 per day from $12. The new charges will be effective with sailings departing on and after March 1, 2015.

For NCL passengers staying in suites, and receiving concierge and butler services, the daily gratuity is raised to $14.95.

Norwegian announced that anyone already booked could prepay the gratuity at the old rate by March 1. Those who plan to book by February 28 can also take advantage and prepay at the current rate.

As at most cruise lines, NCL Norwegian gratuities are added automatically to guests’ cruise bills, but passengers can opt to adjust the amount.

The charge is used to pay room stewards, restaurant servers, support staff, butlers and concierges. Norwegian Cruise Line has not updated service charges since 2009.
