Rescuers are still searching for at least 40 people missing after a passenger ferry capsized in heavy winds in rural south India.

According to Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Chinarajappa, 20 people swam to safety Tuesday evening, May 15, after the river ferry flipped on Godavari River.

Others including a group sailing to a wedding are missing.

Local fishermen rescued survivors. Officials deployed police and a team from National Disasters Relief Force to the scene.

The search was slowed by the fall of darkness and poor communications in the area.

Ferry disasters frequently occur in India with overcrowded boats.
