Every day we learn about another major cruise line that is expanding into China.
According to Wall Street Journal, cruise lines are posting the strongest earnings in history. This year the profits for Carnival have been more than quadrupling and earnings at Royal Caribbean rose 20%. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) grew 26% and Much of these profits came from China.
The major lines all charge premium fares for the Chinese market and sell their staterooms to "the highest bidder". And why should RCI sail from Miami or New York if the Chinese pay 50% more for Quantum of the Seas?
MSC announced that MSC Lirica will be homeported in Shanghai from May 2016. Princess Cruises is already there and Royal Caribbean takes the lead. Next year Ovation of the Seas will join Quantum in China. together with Mariner of the Seas, Legend of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas.
In two weeks Carnival CEO Arnold Donald and Adam Goldstein, Royal Caribbean's COO, will headline the 10th China Cruise Shipping show.
