American Queen Steamboat Company will bring a European tradition to Mississippi River and hold a series of Christmas markets on a few of its December cruises.

The line, which runs two ships, American Empress on Columbia River and American Queen on Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, will offer the markets in Greenville, Mississippi and Nottoway, Louisiana.

The itinerary includes traditional Christmas performances on the levee in Vicksburg and Natchez, Mississippi and holiday music in Saint Francisville, Louisiana.

Another highlight of the festive Christmas Market cruise is a holiday ball at Nottoway plantation, Louisiana. At the event, American Queen Steamboat Company will recreate the lighting of bonfires along Mississippi River levee, which is a tradition for Christmas in south Louisiana and symbolizes the fires that light the way for Papa Noel.

Ted Sykes, president of the cruise line, said they were working with tourism officials and local towns to make sure the crafts sold at the markets were authentic.

Christmas Market cruises onboard the American Queen are scheduled for both 2015 and 2016.
