Disney Wonder rescued twelve Cuban migrants in the Caribbean during the weekend. They were spotted at around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening (February 13), in an unseaworthy “rustic” vessel.
The migrants were taken to the next cruise port in the Cayman Islands on Sunday, according to the coastguard in Miami.
News outlets in the United States report that an increasing number of Cubans try to reach the US after the relations between the countries were normalised. The migrants fear that a current law granting them US residency when they reach the country could be ended.
Cruise operators have agreed to inform the authorities if they spot migrants in unreliable vessels and to rescue them if needed.
