An expensive, ambitious and maybe misguided project to entice cruise ship industry to Houston, is failing and will probably be re-purposed. Sen. John Whitmire said:
“I understand the port is considering several options - one to use it as a retrofit for incoming automobiles.”
“There are other opportunities it can be used for and we’re going to continue to explore those opportunities,” Roger Guenther, Port of Houston Executive Director, said.
The Port would not confirm specific plans for Bayport Cruise Terminal.
Both Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed to Channel 2 Investigates their plans to remove ships from the $108 million Port of Houston’s cruise terminal after the end of the current season. Guenther said:
“The cruise lines have made a decision, a business decision, to go elsewhere.”
As early as late April, the terminal will be left with no ships. The facility sat unused for the intended purpose for nearly 6 years before Princess and NCL signed on in 2012.
According to a Channel 2 Investigation, the cruise terminal has never been profitable since its construction finished in 2008. It cost $108.4 million to build, and since 2013 has lost at least $12m in operating costs.
