Bamberg is a Main River cruise port town located in Upper Franconia, Germany. It is situated on river Regnitz, near its confluence with River Main.
Since 1993, a large part of Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town extends over 7 hills, each crowned by a splendid church. This led to Bamberg being named the "Franconian Rome", though a running joke among tour guides is to refer to Rome instead as "Italian Bamberg". The hills are Abtsberg, Altenburger Hill, Michaelsberg, Cathedral Hill, Kaulberg/Obere Pfarre, Jakobsberg and Stefansberg.
Bamberg Cathedral is a city's late Romanesque building with 4 towers. It was established in 1004 by Emperor Henry II and finished in 1012. The cathedral was consecrated on May 6, 1012. Bamberg is also famous for its smoked Rauchbier - it is home to 9 breweries and one brewpub, Ambräusianum. There is a 5-day Sandkerwa every August (kirmess celebrated with beers).
