  Port Map

Cienfuegos is a major port city on Cuba's central southern coast. It is also known as "La Perla del Sur" ("Pearl of the South") and is located on a peninsula opposite the narrow entrance to the sheltered bay Bahía de Cienfuegos. The distance from the capital Havana is approx 250 km (160 ml).

IMPORTANT: On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately. The ban relates to "private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels". The US travel restrictions impacted hundreds of pre-scheduled cruise itineraries, which were adjusted to no longer stop in Cuban seaports.

The city has population around 165,000 and is very with its nice colonial buildings, numerous parks, waterfront promenades and wide streets. The fortress Castillo de Jagua was completed in 1745 as protection against pirates at the entrance to the bay. Notable buildings include La Catedral Purisma Concepcion (built in 1868), Teatro Tomas (1889) and Palacio de Fererr, now renamed to Casa de Cultura Benjamin with its beautiful corner tower.

In 1494 the bay was visited by Christopher Columbus. Howeverm it was officially founded by French colonists in 1819 and named "Fernandina de Jagua". Destroyed by a storm in 1825, the Cienfuegos settlement was rebuilt and renamed. Cienfuegos port's strategic location on the trade route between South America and Jamaica resulted in the town's fast growth.

In 2005, Hurricane Dennis caused a major landfall near the city, with strong winds and gusts of over 280 kph (175 mph).

Cienfuegos cruise terminal

The first cruise ship that docked at Cienfuegos port was the Carnival Corporation's Adonia Fathom (now Azamara Pursuit) - on May 5, 2016, as port of call on a 7-day roundtrip itinerary from Miami Florida (USA). Adonia was also the world's first cruise liner visiting Cuba. The ship arrived early, but its passengers had only around 3,5 hours to explore the city. Passengers attended a live concert (at Teatro Tomas Terry) performed by the city choir.

The port has no dedicated cruise terminal - just a small building for check-in, a short gangway and a parking lot. Among the closet to the port attractions are Palacio del Valle, the Yacht Club, Parque Jose Martí.
