Donji Milanovac is a town situated in Majdanpek municipality, Bor District, in eastern Serbia. It lies on the right bank of Lake Derdap on Danube River. The population of the city is 2,410 inhabitants (2011 census). Its name is translated as "Lower Milanovac" (Upper Milanovac exists, as well). The management office of Derdap national park is located within Donji Milanovac. The Miroc mountain lies between Tekija and Donji Milanovac.
The town lies on remains of 8000-year-old Mesolithic settlement of Lepenski Vir, and of the Roman Taliata town. Donji Milanovac was relocated twice from its founding in the 19th century when it was settled on its original site on an isle on Danube river.
In 1830, because of the frequent flooding, Prince Milos ordered Donji Milanovac to be moved to the nearest, right river bank. It became the first Serbian town built by architectural planning. Following the construction of the hydroelectric power station "Derdap I" in 1970, the town was moved back to its present location.
During the period between 1929-1941, Donji Milanovac was part of Morava Banovina of Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
The Church of Saint Nicholas is situated in the centre of the town of Donji Milanovac. It was constructed in 1840 due to captain Misa Anastasijevic. Captain Misa's konak and Tenka's house were proclaimed Serbia's cultural heritage. There is a monument to 1912-1918 wars (Balkan Wars, World War I), as well as a mammoth sculpture.
