Drake Bay (Bahia Drake) is located on the north side of Osa Peninsula on southwestern Costa Rica's coast. It is believed to have been used by Sir Francis Drake during the 16th century and to have been the location of one of the fabled hidden treasures of British pirate.
The main city of Bahia Drake is Agujitas with a population of around 1,000 residents. Drake Bay is off the beaten track. It can be reached by boat, plane and car (ideally 4x4 vehicle) during dry season. Due to the lack of bridges, driving to the bay is challenging and not recommended. There are long kilometers of unpaved road as well as multiple river crossings that are required to reach it. There are also kilometers of natural coastline with sandy coves and that extend from Agujitas, where the Bahia Drake village is located southward towards the boundary of Corcovado National Park 20 km to the south. Most eco lodges are situated along the beach. Bahia Drake town has a medical clinic that is opened during week days, a school, a gift shop, a few grocery stores, and several bars and restaurants.
The main feature of Drake Bay is Cano Island snorkeling & diving, and Corcovado National Park hiking. Corcovado National Park occupies around 30% of the peninsula. The preservation of wildlife and forest in the area has been made a priority by the government of Costa Rica.
Drake Bay has been only accessible by sea until recently and remains low-land tropical rainforest. Eco-tourism has been principal economy of the region since about 1990, including sport fishing.
