Dresden is an Elbe River cruise port and the capital of Germany's Saxony state. The city is located near the Germany-Czech Republic border. In February and March 1945 (at the end of WW2 / 1939-1945) the city was heavily bombed by US and UK aircraft. During the all four air raids were killed 25,000+ (mostly civilians) and the downtown was largely destroyed. A total of 1296 heavy bombers (769 British and 527 American) dropped 1182 tons incendiary bombs plus 1478 tons high explosive bombs.

By population (around 800,000, metro over 1,1 million) the city is ranked Saxony's 2nd largest (after Leipzig) and Germany's 12th biggest (4th by metro area - after Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne). Among the city's best known landmarks are Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister (art gallery for 15-18-centuries paintings), Grunes Gewolbe (one of Europe's largest historic museums), Japanisches Palais (Japanese porcelain museum), Galerie Neue Meister (19th-20th-21st-centuries paintings), Rustkammer (historical weapons and armory museum), Volkerkunde Museum (ethnology and folklore), Deutsche Hygiene-Museum (medical), Vorgeschichte Museum (prehistory), Staatliche Naturhistorische Sammlungen (natural history), Universitätssammlung Kunst+Technik (arts and technologies), Verkehrsmuseum (transport), Festung Dresden (fortress), Militarhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr (military history), Botanischer Garten (botanical garden and zoo, part of Grosser Garten park), Pillnitz Castle (summer residence palace for Saxony's bishops and kings), Hofkirche (cathedral), Frauenkirche (Lutheran church).
