Gravdal is a village located in the municipality of Vestvagoy, Nordland county (Norway). It lies on the island of Vestvagoya in the central part of Lofoten archipelago, just north of the Arctic Circle. The village of Gravdal is situated along the shore of Buksnes fjord, about 72 km (45 miles) west of the Svolvaer city and 63 km (39 miles) east of Å in Moskenes. The 1.25 km2 (0.48 ml2 /310-acre) village has a population of 1,590 (as of 2013 census). Of the most famous people who have visited Gravdal village, His Royal Highness King Haakon VII called on once in the 1950s.
Nordland School of Fisheries and Nordland Hospital are located in Gravdal. They have been its major economic centers for a very long time, along with Gravdal port. The Buksnes Church, which was constructed in 1905 in dragestil style and is more than 100 years old, is the main tourist attraction of Gravdal, visited by thousands of tourists per year. Gravdal provides access to the ocean, mountains, football fields, basketball court, gymnasium with handball court and a small beach.
Although increasingly populous, Gravdal has gone from being a trade center on the island, previously encompassing 4 different grocery stores, bank, postal office, fashion boutique, flower shop, furniture shop, architect's office, cinema, hotel and restaurants, to becoming a residential village. Currently, only one grocery store still remains, since neighboring town of Leknes has become the center for administration and trade of the municipality.
However, the town of Gravdal still has a primary school, kindergarten, bowling alley, kiosk of Narvesen-chain, RV-dealership, tanning salon, hair salon, and a night club named Titanic Dancing (which by legend hosted legendary actor Al Pacino, shooting scenes for the movie Revolution 1776 on Lofoten Islands).
