Hobart is Tasmania's main cruise port, having Australia's deepest harbour. The port is located on Derwent River, while the city's background is dominated by Mount Wellington. Hobart is the country's capital city located on Tasmania Island. The state is part of the Commonwealth of Australia and is approx 240 km (150 mi) south of mainland Australia.

The city has population around 220,000 and attracts bouth Australian and international tourists with its unique environment, rich heritage, numerous galleries and museums, festive events and festivals. Among the most popular is the annual "Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race". The race starts in Sydney NSW (on Boxing Day / the day after Christmas Day) and finishes in Port Hobart. The distance is approx 1170 km (730 mi). The yacht race is sponsored by Tasmania's Royal Yacht Club and is considered one of the world's most difficult ones.

The Port's cruising season starts in October and ends in April.

In Hobart is homeported the French icebreaker shipL'Astrolabe (2017-built). The ship operates on roundtrips to Antarctica, serving the Dumont d'Urville Station (France) located in Adelie Land.

Hobart cruise terminal

Port Hobart's cruise ship terminal is located at Macquarie Wharf, with 3 dedicated berths. The passenger terminal has a waterfront location in downtown Hobart (Hunter Street), on the eastern docks. Most of the city's main sights are within easy walking distance.

The cruise port's closest to the city center berth is "Pier 1". The most distant berth is "Pier 3". The terminal's area is historically known as "Constitution Docks". Today, the area is well developed and has many shops selling gifts, souvenirs, hand-made crafts and arts, clothing, also several food and beverage/F&B venues.

The cruise terminal's facilities were last renovated in 2013. The refurbishment project's budget was AUD 7 million. The new "Macquarie Wharf 2" terminal building was inaugurated in October 2013. The first ship call was by the Sea Princess ship.

  • The new Terminal 2 offers as amenities and services waiting hall, visitor info services, retail shops (including locally-made crafts, gifts, duty-free jewelry), currency exchange.
  • The Hobart port's re-development project transformed the under-utilized wharf into a modern cargo facility plus a modern cruise passenger terminal. The project was based on extensive consultations with port customers, cruise companies and Australia's Antarctic logistics community.
  • The project included the installation of new internal walls, creating 3 sections for cruise terminal, Antarctic cargo handling areas, offices. New entry ramp was constructed. The old asbestos roof was removed and replaced with a new. A new road network manages better the cruise passenger traffic and includes 15 new bus bays.
  • Among the project's innovations were the use of natural light and ventilation in the terminal building,

The cruise ship terminal's waterfront location and facility size allow it to be used for various public events on non-ship days.
