Kailua-Kona is a CDP (census-designated place) in Hawaii County, Hawaii USA, in North Kona District of the "Big Island". The population of Kailua-Kona was 11,975 in 2010. Kailua is the center of commerce and tourist industry on West Hawaii. Its post office is designated to differentiate Kailua-Kona from the bigger Kailua situated on windward side of Oahu island. In everyday speech it is sometimes referred to as "Kona". Kailua-Kona is served by Kona International Airport, situated just to the north in adjacent Kalaoa CDP. The city was the closest main settlement to the epicenter of 2006 Hawaii Earthquake.
Kailua-Kona is the start and finish of the annual triathlon Ironman World Championship, Kona Coffee Festival, and Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Famous Kona coffee is a variety of Coffea arabica cultivated on Hualalai and Mauna Loa's slopes in North and South Kona Districts. Kailua Pier is a starting and finishing point for Ironman World Championship Triathlon held in October. North of Kailua pier is Kamakahonu royal residence and Ahuena Heiau. Parks include Laʻaloa Bay ("White Sands Beach" or "Magic Sands") and Kahaluʻu Bay, featuring some of Hawaii's best snorkeling.
Honomalino Bay is located on the "Big Island" (Hawaii Island's) southwestern coast - south of Milolii (a fishing village). The bay has a half-mile of black-sand beach and is accessible only by boat (ship) or by foot from the village.
- The beach (known as "salt-and-pepper beach") is lined up with high palm trees.
- The short hike to Honomalino Bay passes through some rainforest, also crossing lava flows from Mauna Loa (an active vulcano within the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park).
- At Honomalino Bay there are no any facilities, and no camping or fires are allowed.
