King George River is a permanent river located in Kimberley region, Western Australia. River's headwaters rise to the west of Ashton Range and flow in a northerly direction through Drysdale River National Park past Seppelt Range, joined by a minor tributary before reaching the river mouth and emptying in Koolama Bay and Timor Sea, around 70 km (43 miles) east of Kalumburu.
King George River descends 216 m (709 ft) over its 112 km (70 miles) course, including 40-metre (131-ft) descent over dual drop waterfall King George Falls, about 12 km (7.5 miles) upriver from the mouth of the river. The falls are situated at an elevation of 84 m (276 ft) above sea level.
Waterfall's recorded height widely varies. Some sources claim that the descent is 80–100 m (262–328 ft). The region surrounding the falls is popular with tourists who ordinarily admire the falls via a boat. From late December through early May each year the falls are in full force and gradually retreat to a September small flow. An interesting fact is that the falls were featured in 2008 film, Australia, by Baz Luhrmann.
King George River was named by explorer Charles Conigrave in 1911after privately funded expedition. The river is named to honour King George V. Miwa peoples are the traditional owners of the area around the river.
