Kolkata (aka Calcutta) is the capital of the West Bengal state (India). Located on the east bank of Hooghly river, the city is principal commercial, educational and cultural centre. Port of Kolkata is the oldest operating cargo shipping port and a major river cruise port in India. As of 2016, Kolkata has a city population of 5 million and metropolitan area (city and the suburbs) population of over 14,6 million, ranking it as India's 3rd-most populous. In 2010, West Bengal generated as gross domestic product USD 150 billion, which was the India's 3rd highest - after the states Mumbai and Delhi.

Kolkata is the major East-North-East financial and commercial hub of India. The city is home to Calcutta Stock Exchange. It has also a military port, a major cargo port, an international airport.

Once leading Indian city, Kolkata experienced an economic decline in the decades after the independence due to steep population increase and rise in militant trade-unionism (including frequent strikes, backed by left-wing parties). As of 1960s until late 1990s, a few factories were shut down and businesses relocated. Lack of resources and capital added to the depressed state of economy and gave rise to unwelcome sobriquet: "dying city". The fortunes of Kolkata improved after the economy of India was liberalised during the 1990s. Changes in economic policy were approved by West Bengal state government.

The city of Kolkata is famous for its revolutionary, literary and artistic heritage. As former India's capital, it was the birthplace of contemporary Indian artistic and literary thought. Kolkata has been often called "City of Furious, Creative Energy" and the "cultural capital of India". The city boasts a tradition of political graffiti which depict everything from witty banter to outrageous slander and propaganda.

Kolkata city has many buildings decorated with Indo-Saracenic and Indo-Islamic architectural motifs. A few well-maintained buildings from the colonial period were declared "heritage structures", while others are in different stages of decay. Founded in 1814 as the oldest museum of the nation, Indian Museum houses collections which showcase Indian art and natural history. Marble Palace is an example of European mansion built in the city. Victoria Memorial has a museum documenting Kolkata's history. The National Library of India is country's leading public library while Science City is the biggest science centre in Indian subcontinent.
