Lake Michigan is among the 5 Great Lakes of North America. It is also the only one situated entirely within the U.S. The other 4 Great Lakes are shared by the United States and Canada. It is the 2nd-largest of the Great Lakes by volume, as well as 3rd-largest by surface area, following Lake Superior and Lake Huron (Lake Michigan is slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia).

  • To the east, lake's basin is conjoined with the basin of Lake Huron via the wide Straits of Mackinac. Technically, the two are a single lake. Lake Michigan has a total surface area of 58,030 km2 (22,404 ml2) and maximum width of 190 km (118 ml).
  • From west to east, Lake Michigan is shared, by the United States' states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan. Ports along lakes' shores include Benton Harbor, Chicago, Gary, Green Bay, Indiana, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Originally, the word "Michigan" referred to the lake itself. It is believed to come from Ojibwa word "mishigami" which means "great water". The name of Lake Illinois was found in addition to the name of "Michigan" in the earliest maps of the region.
  • Major industries on all Great Lakes are recreation and tourism. A number of small cruise ships sail on Lake Michigan, including two sailing ships. Many water sports are practiced on the Great Lakes, such as sea kayaking, diving, lake surfing, yachting and kitesurfing. The Great Lakes Circle Tour is a designated scenic road system, connecting all of the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River.
  • Passenger steamers have been operating on the Great Lakes since the mid-1800s. A few ferries currently operate to carry passengers to different islands, including Bois Blanc Island and Beaver Island. Currently, 2 car ferry services sail on Lake Michigan from April to November: SS Badger steamer from Ludington to Manitowoc, and high speed catamaran Lake Express, from Milwaukee to Muskegon.
