Luanda is a seaport, largest city and the capital of Angola (south-central Africa). The city has total area approx 113 km2 (44 mi2) and population around 2,83 million. Luanda is also Angola's primary port and largest industrial and cultural center.

Luanda is currently world's 3rd most populous Portuguese-speaking city (following only Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil) and also world's most populous Portuguese-speaking capital (ahead of Brasilia, Maputo and Lisbon).

Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais (1510-1589) founded the town in 1576 (as "Sao Paulo da Assumpcao de Loanda"). The first settlement had only 100 families plus 400 soldiers. In 1618 was built Fortaleza Sao Pedro da Barra (fortress) followed by two more - Sao Miguel (1634) and Sao Francisco do Penedo (1766). Of the three, Sao Miguel is best-preserved.

Currently, the city is undergoing major reconstruction, with a lot of large developments taking place and expected to alter the cityscape significantly. Around 1/3 of Angola'spopulation live in Luanda City, of whom over 1/2 in severe poverty. City's living conditions are poor for most of its residents, with essential services (electricity and drinking water) still in short supply, as well as serious shortcomings in traffic. Luxury building projects for city's wealthy minority are booming. For resident foreigners, Luanda is ranked among world's most expensive cities.

Port Luanda is country's largest seaport, also benefitting from major expansion projects. A new port was developed at Dande and opened in 2014. It is approx 30 km (19 mi) to the north of the city.
