Luganville is the 2nd largest city in Vanuatu. In 2009 its population was 13,170 people. The city is named Santo by people from the northern islands of Vanuatu, who use Luganville as their large city. It is named Kanal by rural residents of Espiritu Santo Island (from French Second Canal).
The main street which runs through Luganville features most of commercial businesses. It is very wide as a result of American base commander who insisted that 4 army tanks could be driven along the road side by side. Outlying roads and small side streets cater for residential zones. Luganville's main street contains the municipal council building and the market at one end and the port at the other end. In the centre there are a couple of main types of stores: all-in-one stores (described as a cross between a hardware store and a supermarket) and tourist boutiques.
Luganville is one of the busiest ports of Vanuatu, especially as transshipment point for cacao and copra. The body of water off Luganville's coast behind Aore Island, Segond Channel, provides the town with an exclusive, well sheltered harbour.
During WWII about 40,000 US military personnel were stationed in the port city and it is estimated the between 400,000-500,000 military personnel took R&R on the island, operating three bomber airfields, huge wharf and nearby drydock. This period in the history of Luganville is evident in military-constructed Quonset huts that are still scattered around the town.
