Magdeburg is an Elbe River cruise port and the capital city of Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state (Urban district). By population (around 240,000), the city is ranked the state's second largest (after Halle-Saale).

Port Magdeburg's locode is DEMAG and it is managed by the company Magdeburger Hafen GmbH.

The city has two renowned universities (Otto-von-Guericke Universitat/1993-opened, and Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal/1991-opened, of Applied Sciences) and is also a major industrial and trade center. Major industries include steel production, chemical products, textiles, paper, plant and mechanical engineering, ecotechnologies, export and logistics, healthcare.

Among Magdeburg's best-known landmarks and tourist attractions are Magdeburger Dom (Germany's first Gothic Cathedral/Cathedral of Saints Maurice and Catherine, 10th-century), Unser Lieben Frauen (former monastery/now museum), St Johannis-Kirche (11th-century church), Magdeburger Reiter (statue), Alte Rathaus (Old Town Hall/13t-century building), Landtag von Sachsen-Anhalt (building complex at Domplatz/Cathedral Square), Rotehornpark (200-hectares nature park), Elbauenpark (100-hectares family and leisure park), Gruson-Gewachshauser (botanical garden), Kanalbrucke Magdeburg (Water Bridge, Europe's longest navigable aqueduct with length 106 m/348 ft, and air-draft 90 m/295 ft), Grune Zitadelle (2005-opened building housing shops, cafe, restaurant, theater, ART hotel, nursery, plus apartments, practices, offices).

Magdeburg is also famous for its Christmas Market - a holiday travel destination attracting over 1,5 million visitors yearly. Other popular public events are Stadtfest, Europafest, Christopher Street Day (European LGBT demonstration).
