Meemu Atoll (aka Mulaku, Mulak, Mulakatolhu) is one of Maldives' 19 atolls (ring-shaped groups of coral reefs and small islands).
On the Kolhufushi Island there is a historical mosque. Off the southeastern reef of Kolhuvaariyaafushi there is a 1573 wreck of Kalhuohfummi - the ship of Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam - a captain and king of the Maldives between 1573-1585. He is considered as the nation's hero for driving out the Portuguese who ruled the Maldives between 1558-1573. His victory is celebrated each year as Qaumee Dhuvas (National Day).
