Mooloolaba is a tourist resort township and suburb on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, Australia. It is part of Maroochydore urban centre and is located 97 km (60 miles) north of the state capital, Brisbane. At 2011 Australian Census, Mooloolaba suburb recorded a population of 7,330 inhabitants on a total area of 4.0 km2 (1.5 ml2).
Mooloolaba derives from "mulu", an Aboriginal word meaning snapper fish, or from "mulla" - Red-bellied Black Snake. Originally popular as "Mooloolah Heads", the name changed in 1919 to Mooloolaba by Thomas O'Connor when he subdivided land for sale here.
The esplanade facing the beach of Mooloolaba is a centre for tourist activity, with the UnderWater World marine park, many clothing and souvenir shops, bookshops, restaurants and galleries. Behind the apartments that face the beach are backpacker hostels, canal villas and camping grounds. Mooloolaba is a popular tourist destination, with cruise ships anchoring outside the port on a regular basis.
Mooloolaba is serviced by train and connecting bus via Landsborough, Nambour and Woombye station, by coach from Brisbane, and by air via Sunshine Coast Airport.
Mooloolaba featured in the 4th season of Amazing Race. Pastor Bill Furler and Evangelist Peter Foxhall pioneered an Assemblies of God church at Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club during the mid-1980s. The town was the home of Christian pop & rock band Newsboys, and is the 4th town mentioned in the Australian version of the song "I've Been Everywhere".
