Mormugao (called by the British Marmagoa) is a sub-district and municipal council in the district of South Goa, Goa state (India). It is the main port of Goa and was featured in the film "The Sea Wolves" (1980) and the Bollywood "Bhootnath". As of 2001, Mormugao had a population of 97,100 with 11% under 6 years of age.
During the 18th century epidemics devastated Mormugao, but after that the fortunes turned. Mormugao became a key trading point as the importance of India's excellent natural harbour grew more apparent. It was chosen for terminus of a new metre gauge railway which linked the Portuguese colony to British India. The British enterprise Western India Portuguese Guaranteed Railways Company modernised the port for a fabulous price and built the railway. In July 1886 both were opened to the public.
Mormugao’s city of Vasco da Gama was built in the early years of the 20th century. A colourful city of migrant labourers, traders and officials, it had its British club life and Portuguese academies for several decades. Now rather scarred, the district of Mormugao continues to be unique in Goa. Mormugao is the first experience of Goa for many visitors, with the railway terminus at Vasco da Gama, the airport at Dabolim, and the busy port.
In 1963 the port of Mormugao was accorded the status of Major Port. Ever since that, it has contributed to the growth of India's maritime trade. Mormugao is the major iron ore exporting port of India. Its annual throughput is around 27.33 M tonnes of iron ore traffic.
