Nevis is a small island in the Caribbean that forms part of the inner arc of West Indies' Leeward Islands chain. Nevis and neighbouring Saint Kitts Island constitute one country: Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Nevis is situated close to the northern end of Lesser Antilles archipelago, around 80 km west of Antigua and 350 km east-southeast of Puerto Rico. Its area is 93 km2 (36 ml2) and Charlestown is the capital city.
The majority of the nearly 12,000 citizens of Nevis Island are of primarily African descent. The official language is English, and the literacy rate, 98%, is one of the highest in Western Hemisphere.
Saint Kitts and Nevis are separated by a 3-kilometre (2 mile) shallow channel, "The Narrows". Nevis is conical in shape with the Nevis Peak volcano at its centre. On its western and northern coastlines the island is fringed by beaches composed of a mix of white coral sand with black and brown sand that is eroded and washed down from volcanic rocks which make up the isle.
Nevis Island was named Oualie (translated as "Land of Beautiful Waters") by the early British settlers. "Nevis" is derived from the Spanish "Nuestra Senora de las Nieves" meaning "Our Lady of the Snows". This name first appears on maps during the 16th century. Nevis is also famous as "Queen of the Caribees", a sobriquet it earned in the 18th century, when sugar plantations created wealth for the British.
Nevis Island is of great historical significance to Americans as it was the birthplace and childhood home of Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804). For the British, it is the site where Horatio Nelson was stationed as young sea captain, and where he met and married the Nevisian, Frances Nisbet, young widow of plantation-owner.
