Nha Trang is a coastal city and capital of Khanh Hoa Province, located on the South Central Coast of Vietnam. Nha Trang is bounded on the west by Dien Khanh District, on the north by Ninh Hoa district, and on the south by Cam Ranh town. The city has around 560,000 inhabitants, a number that is projected to increase to 630,000 by 2025. An area of 12.87 sq.km (4.97 sq.miles) of the western communes of Dien Toan and Dien An was merged in Nha Trang which made its new area of 265 sq.km (102.50 sq.miles) based on the approval of Vietnam's Prime Minister in September 2012.
Nha Trang is famous for its beaches and scuba diving. It has developed into a well-known destination for international tourists, which attracts large numbers of backpackers and more affluent travelers on Asia's south-east circuit. Nha Trang is already very popular with tourists from Vietnam, with Nha Trang Bay considered as among the most beautiful bays in the world. Travelers are welcome to participate in the renowned Sea Festival, held biennially. On July 14, 2008 Nha Trang was the site of Miss Universe 2008 Pageant on December 4, 2010 - of Miss Earth 2010. On April 14, 2015 it was also the site for season 8 finale of Face Off. Nha Trang also hosted 2016 Asian Beach Games.
The city was historically known as "Kauthara under the Champa". Nha Trang is still home to Po Nagar Tower that was built by the Champa. As a coastal city, Nha Trang is also the centre for marine science based at Nha Trang Oceanography Institute. Hon Mun marine protected area is among the four first marine protected areas in the world admitted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
