The port city of Oranjestad has a population of around 35,000, and in local language is often referred to simply as "Playa". Aruba is the smallest (total area 179 km2 / 69 ml2) of the ABC Duch islands in the Leeward Antilles group (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao). The other "Dutch Antilles" islands are in the Lesser Antilles - Sint Maarten (the southern part of Saint Martin island), Saba Island and the Sint Eustatius Island.
Shortly after Fort Zoutman was built in 1796, Oranjestad was built around it. Initially the city had no official name, being known as the town on the Bay of Horses, a place from which native-bred horses were raised and sent to neighboring Curacao. Ever since, the town has been the capital city of the isle. Oranjestad is named after the first king of the Netherlands, King William I. The name was conferred on the town in the 1820s when the interest in Aruba increased due to the discovery of gold deposits.
Several modern recreations have emerged in Oranjestad, including an outdoor shopping mall at Royal Plaza, as well as a few scattered buildings along Main Street and on Main Square. Fort Zoutman is one of the attractions, others being the Willem III Tower, located near the fort, and the tax-free harbour. There are eight museums on the island.
Renaissance Island is a 16 ha (40 acres) artificial island off the coast close to Oranjestad. It's privately owned and features the only private beaches on Aruba. There are two beaches: Flamingo Beach and Iguana Beach. A Beechcraft 18 and Convair 400 were both deliberately sunk nearly 50 yards (46 m) ofshore in order to create a diving site. Flamingoes can be seen on the isle.
