Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve is located 183 km (114 ml) southwest of Iquitos. It is the largest protected region in Peru and the 2nd largest in Amazon region. With an area of 20,800 km2 (8,030 ml2), it is very rich in biodiversity. Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve was established in 1982 by the Peruvian Government.

  • The national reserve is triangular shaped by Ucayali and Maranon rivers in the south, just before their junction that is the origin of Amazon River. Its major purpose is to protect the ecosystem of Omagua Natural Region, as well as to promote sustainable development of local towns.
  • The majority of reserve's territory is floodable jungle, with a variety of lagoons (cochas) and islands. The most visited lagoon is the famous El Dorado, which is the heart of Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve and contains the most fauna, situated in Yanayacu low basin and center of tourism for RNPS. It is a prosperous example of entrepreneurship concentrated in living community tourism.
  • While sailing along the rivers travellers can see pink dolphins, monkeys and manatees, as well as other species of mammals, fish and birds.
  • There are a variety of lodgings within Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve and the surrounding areas which offer everything from the most basic amenities to luxury services. Tourists can travel by cruise boat and enjoy an exciting experience.
  • Only about 30,000 people live permanently within Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve. Tourists have the chance to meet some of them and gain a firsthand understanding of Amazon life. In addition, park rangers introduce guests to some of the sustainability projects and innovative conservation taking place within the vast rain forest reserve.
