Phnom Penh is the most populous city and capital of Cambodia. It is situated on the banks of Mekong River, Bassac and Tonle Sap. Phnom Penh has been country's capital since French colonization and has grown to become Cambodia's center of industrial and economic activities, as well as the center of politics, security, diplomacy and cultural heritage.
Once famous as the "Pearl of Asia," Phnom Penh was considered one of the most beautiful French-built cities in Indochina. Phnom Penh, together with Sihanoukville and Siem Reap, are significant domestic and global tourist destinations. Established in 1434, the city is noted for its historical architecture and interesting attractions. There are some surviving French colonial buildings that are scattered along grand boulevards.
