Mao-Mahon, written in English also as Mahon, is a municipality and capital city of Menorca Island, Spain, as well as the seat of Island Council of Minorca. Port Mahon is located on the island's eastern coast, which is part of the Balearic Islands' autonomous community. Mao-Mahon features one of the world's largest natural harbours: 5 km (3.1 miles) long and up to 900 m (2,953 feet) wide. Though the water is deep, it remains mostly clear due to being slightly enclosed. In 2009 the population of Port Mahon was estimated to be 29,500 inhabitants.
In 1715, the British established a small but prominent Royal Navy Dockyard on the north side of harbour, opposite the city. It served as the principal Mediterranean base of the Royal Navy for much of the 18th century, and today is still in use as a Spanish Naval station. Dockyard buildings from the 1760s are still seen on Illa Pinto (former Saffron Island) including the famous Naval Storehouse with clock tower.
Today Port Mahon serves as the seat of Consell Insular de Menorca (Island Council of Minorca). Towards the end of 20th century, the renovation of Mahon's historic centre was made possible due to income from tourism.
Mahon cheese, a traditional cheese made on Menorca Island, is named after the city. An interesting fact about Mahon is that it is considered to be the birthplace of mayonnaise - some believe that the name and origin of mayonnaise are found in the Minorcan city. "Mahón" in Spanish is the name of nankeen.
