Putuoshan Island is located southeast of Shanghai, in Zhoushan prefecture (Zhejiang province, China). Putuoshan Island is a notable site in Chinese Buddhism. Putuoshan Island is considered the bodhimanda of bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Guanyin). It is one of the 4 sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism, with the others being Mount Jiuhua, Mount Emei and Mount Wutai. Mount Putuo lies in Eastern Sea of China. It incorporates the beauty of both sea and mountain. The area of Putuoshan Island is approximately 12.5 sq.kilometers and there are a wealth of famous temples. Every year on Feb 19, Jun 19, and Sept 19 it welcomes millions for celebrating the birth of Guanyin.
Putuo has many temples and monasteries, all under the directive of Chinese Buddhist Association. Many nuns and monks from all over the country and abroad wish to live and practice there. Currently, there are over 30 major temples situated at Mount Putuo, including Huiji Temple, Puji Temple and Fayu Temple. In addition to the monasteries, there is an Institute of Buddhism, one of the biggest Chinese Buddhist academic institutes.
