Raiatea is the 2nd largest of Society Islands, following Tahiti, in French Polynesia. Raiatea Island is regarded as 'centre' of eastern islands in ancient Polynesia. It is likely that the organised migrations to Aotearoa, Hawaii and other parts of East Polynesia began at Raiatea. A traditional name for Raiatea Island is believed to be Havaii. Located on the south east coast is historical Taputaputea, established by 1000 AD.
The main township on Raiatea Island is Uturoa, administrative centre for Leeward Islands. There are also colleges serving as the major educational location for secondary schools for children from the regional islands of Tahaa, Huahine, Maupiti and Pora Pora.
The islands of Tahaa and Raiatea are enclosed by a coral reef, and may have been a single island. Raiatea is both the biggest and most populated island in Leeward Islands, with an area of 167.7 km2 (64.7 ml2) and a total population of 12,020 inhabitants (August 2007 census). The largest commune of Raiatea is Uturoa situated on the north side of Raiatea and has a population of around 10,000.
Raiatea Island has a small road running around the entire island. Raiatea Airport is located in Uturoa. The island is divided into 3 administration communes (municipalities): Uturoa, Taputapuatea and Tumaraa. These are inside the administrative subdivision of Leeward Islands.
The economy of Raiatea Island is mainly agricultural with exports of pineapple, coconut and vanilla. The plant Nono (noni - Morinda citrifolia) is largely grown. Faaroa Valley is an important agricultural region with rural economy and cultivation of vanilla supported by the local research facility. Another important industry is pearl farming, while farming pigs, cattle and sheep has decreased. There is less tourism in comparison with the other islands in the archipelago. Raiatea's local tourist infrastructure comprises two marinas, a 4-star hotel, boarding houses and a port for cruise ships.
